House votes to end presidential public financing system; Senate and White
House opposes bid
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted, along party lines, to
end the presidential public financing system. The Senate is not likey to
agree.

"This is an attempt to finish the job that the Supreme Court started with
the Citizens United decision," Senator Charles Schumer, a New York
Democrat and chairman of the Rules Committee, which has jurisdiction over campaign
finance legislation, told _Bloomberg_
(http://midwestdemocracynetwork.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e49a424536497d74f9a5febe7&id=fa1491a431&e=c3bee
cf55e
) . "It would bust one of the last dams protecting our election
system from an uncontrolled flood of special-interest money."

Even after President Obama completely opted out of public financing in the
2008 presidential election, the White House opposes a Republican-backed
bill that would end the system. (Something he said he would not do in the
answer to a _Midwest Demcracy Network questionnaire_
(http://midwestdemocracynetwork.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e49a424536497d74f9a5febe7&id=5ff2f9

) .)

Eliminating it, the White House said, would "force many candidates into an
endless cycle of fundraising at the expense of engagement with voters on
the issues" the _Washington Post reported_

) .

The bill would suspend the program that allows voters to donate $3 to the
presidential campaign fund. _According to Politico_
(http://midwestdemocracynetwork.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e49a424536497d74f9a5febe7&id=4c10

) , Republicans claim ending the program would save
approximately $617 million over 10 years. The program, started in 1976, gives
voters an option to direct $3 to the presidential campaign fund . The
donations don't reduce a taxpayer's tax refund. Eliminating the program would
save about $617 million over 10 years, Republicans say.

_The system is short on money_
(http://midwestdemocracynetwork.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=e49a424536497d74f9a5febe7&id=ecd189b14f&e=c3beecf55e)
though, with only 7.3 percent of Americans volunteered to donated to the
fund in 2010, down from 1980's high of 28.7 percent.

The Presidential Election Campaign Fund "is the very definition of
frivolous Washington spending," Oklahoma Republican Tom Cole said, and "it's not
a good sign that the Democrats are squealing about cutting a program only 7
percent of Americans support."

money in American politics, counterst that the tax checkoff is not a poll

polls have shown public support for the presidential public financing system .

) shows 44 states and the District of Columbia
are projecting budget deficits totaling $125 billion for the 2012 fiscal
year.

A number of governors have responded to the upcoming fiscal year by
creating massive cuts to state services on top of cuts already made since the
current recession.

REFORM PRIORITY NEWS
REDISTRICTING | Minnesota | Illinois | Ohio

Focus should not be on partisanship, but people
MALDEF, along with other civil rights and civic engagement organizations,
issued a statement regarding the recently released reapportionment data,
stating the redistricting process centers around communities and not
political parties. All communities should feel welcome to participate in their
redistricting process, which must comply with the Federal Voting Act.

Lawsuit filed as Minnesota's redistricting process gets underway
A federal lawsuit filed Wednesday alleges that Minnesota's congressional
and legislative political boundaries are out of sync with new population
information, according to the _Minneapolis Star Tribune_

) .

The lawsuit, filed by a handful of Minnesota voters, asks election
officials to not hold the 2012 elections based on those boundaries. If legislators
fail to retool the boundaries by the end of the session, the plaintiffs
ask the court to order the parties to submit proposed legislative and
congressional plans to the court for consideration.

Thanks Art that is a speech to watch when you have the time to watch it
straight through and have some time to think about later.

[PDI] Dennis Kucinich's NEEDS Act, and my Show Us the M-O-N-E-Y! articles

*** SENT THROUGH PDI MAILING LIST ***
Hi all!

Just a quick update on the money thing.

So much media attention was diverted to "other" matters that most of you
may not be aware that last Dec 17, DK took a truly bold step by
submitting the NEEDS Act :
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-6550

This Act contains many of the elements of monetary reform that I have
been harping about for years now, and which in fact were drawn from the
American Monetary Institute Draft for monetary reform:
http://www.monetary.org/amacolorpamphlet.pdf

The monetary issue is the most important issue that can be or has ever
been addressed because from it flows all other things. I do hope you'll
join in the struggle for REAL money reform, not the phony state bank
alternative.

Mark your calendars, I will be at the College of Complexes with a
presentation titled "Bailing out the people, not the bankers -
constitutionally!" February 26. I think it will be very loosely
centered around the NEEDS Act (I think, haven't prepared it yet). I'll
send an invite at a later date.

In the meantime please read - carefully - my three part series titled
"Memo to Congress: Show Us the M-O-N-E-Y!". This should make things a
lot clearer. So far the first 2 parts are published at online Journal
with the third coming soon. I will also submit to Dissident Voice and
will let you know if and when the series is published there.

Some subtitles may peak your curiosity enough to read these rather long
articles. Part 1: Main Street Woes Belie Wall Street Gains & Big Trouble
Ahead for State and Local Budgets? Part 2: The Debt Crisis, Real and
Imagined. Part 3: Yes It Is True, Bank Credit Is Not Money & Currency
Plays.

Links: http://onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_6833.shtml or
use their search button by entering the series title.

all my best,
Geri Perry

Re: [PDI] 2011!

*** SENT THROUGH PDI MAILING LIST ***
Dan,

Got swallowed up by the holidays and trying to get familiar with my new
mini-mac computer.

Today, I was trying to catch up on emails so I could join a private
(sort of) AMI monetary discussion group --- and I found this post.

PLEASE do not recommend a state owned central bank!! Think about it,
please! Its the same old same old evil, however well intentioned the
originators of this idea may have been!!

I hope to be publishing a 3 part article (hopefully the series will get
accepted, they are too long for most venues) that provides insight into
why this is so, and what the real solution is - which is, need I remind
you, outlined in Part 2 of my book. I will send the links for each
article as soon as I get them accepted somewhere. It may be a week or
two, I am just now completing this project.

In the meantime, read this: http://cafr1.com/StateBanksAndTheft.html

keeping in touch as best I can, not getting any younger you know.

Hope the holidays were good to you.

Geri P

PS: I will also make a presentation at College of Complexes Feb 26,
working title "Bailing out the people, not the banks - constitutionally!
http://www.collegeofcomplexes.org/ Stephen Zarlenga of the AMI will
present this Saturday, with info about DK's NEED Act:

[PDI] List posts (was: Re: Fwd: [IllinoisSinglePayer] please sign petitionin support of illinois universal health care act)

Okay, long and slightly technical discussion to ensue here. I know this sort of
thing can make people's eyes glaze over. ** Everybody please read it anyway. **
It's important for everyone to have a basic understanding of how the list works
so we can cut down on this kind of misunderstanding in future.

The post Ron is talking about, like this one that y'all are reading now, was
sent not directly to him, but to everybody over the list, even though it looks
like it wasn't. The message received by Ron was addressed like an email sent
directly to him:

To: ronweiner1@comcast.net

The copy that each of you received was similarly addressed to your own
individual address. That's what our list is set to do. It used to show the list
address (pdi@illinoisprogressives.org) in the To: field. That turned out to be a
problem, because we had people reporting our messages as spam and couldn't
figure out who because the messages didn't identify the recipient.

To hopefully reduce confusion in future, I've added a new header at the top of
each post identifying the message as having come through this list.

How else can you tell a list post from a private email? The surest way is to go
to the list archives and see whether the post is there. Use that URL at the
bottom of every list post. Then click on the PDI Archives link. You will have to
log in with the password that should be emailed to you once a month.

As far as looking at the message itself, there are a number of ways to tell a
list post, none of which is absolutely foolproof:

1) Look for the list footer at the bottom of the post.

Every post that comes through the list will have this footer with YOUR address
after "This message was sent to". If it has SOMEBODY ELSE'S address then it's
NOT a list post. Unfortunately a lot of people don't snip out anything from
previous messages when sending a reply. Even if it is your address, it could
have been left in from a post that you replied to.

2) Look at the full headers of the email. It should have a line like this:

Received: from qmta02.emeryville.ca.mail.comcast.net ([76.96.30.24])
by ossus.tchmachines.com with esmtp (Exim 4.69)
(envelope-from <ronweiner1@comcast.net>) id 1PdwoE-0003gm-Tp
for pdi@illinoisprogressives.org; Fri, 14 Jan 2011 22:28:14 -0500

This is from Ron's post, but every list post will have a similar header with the
sender's address and IP in place of Ron's.

Farther down, you should see headers like these:

List-Id: Progressive Dems of IL
<pdi_illinoisprogressives.org.illinoisprogressives.org>
List-Unsubscribe:
<mailto:pdi-request@illinoisprogressives.org?subject=unsubscribe>
List-Archive:
<http://illinoisprogressives.org/mailman/private/pdi_illinoisprogressives.org>
List-Post: <mailto:pdi@illinoisprogressives.org>
List-Help: <mailto:pdi-request@illinoisprogressives.org?subject=help>
List-Subscribe:
<mailto:pdi-request@illinoisprogressives.org?subject=subscribe>

3) If you hit the Reply button to a list message, the reply message will be
addressed back to the list, whereas with an email directly to you the reply
would be addressed to the sender.

In general, before you send off a reply to any email, ALWAYS look at the
destination fields (the To:, CC:, and BCC:) to see where the reply is actually
addressed. It might not be going where you think it's going. If just hitting
"Reply" doesn't address the message where you want, any good email software will
let you edit the destination(s) before you hit the "Send" button.

Re: [PDI] Fwd: [IllinoisSinglePayer] please sign petitionin support of illinois universal health care act

(For Gary Kleppe)

Gary:

At the risk of continuing this "exercise-to-no-real-point" it seems from the
e-address that you are addressing your remarks to me when I think you might
have meant them for Elaine Hopkins, the person who began this entire
situation by commenting that the Zip extension, in her estimation, was
unimportant and unnecessary. After all, I was not the author of the
sentence beginning "Hey Ron, etc..." (see below). That was Ms. Hopkins. My
"contribution," if one wants to consider that label, was simply to explain
the her that most of us know and use our zip extension when requested. So I
will assume you meant that e-mail for her.

Enough, already...

Ron.

It's not Ron's petition.

I was the one who posted the link, but it's not my petition either. Nobody
who
is on this email list and receiving these emails has any actual control over
it.

The Illinois Single-Payer Coalition is responsible for the petition. If you
have
a problem with it, might I suggest you take it up with them.

Re: [PDI] Australia Floods

Good point, Art, re: Haiti. I can tell you, though, Australia is no Haiti. They have a much better local government in Queensland. You'd be amazed how much it resembles a coastal area of the US on
Google Maps satellite view, for starters. I've been following the discussion on Twitter using the search terms #QLDFloods , #TheBigWet , and #Brisbane . The Aussies are galantly self-organizing clean-up squads, meals, shared laundry facilities, sleeping & shower facilities for the displaced, etc. The area went through something similar in 1893 & again in 1974. The volume of water this time around, however is quadruple that of Katrina, in an area of greater population by far than NOLA. There are 2 million people in the metro-Brisbane area alone. Comparing it to Haiti is apples & sauerkraut. Not even the same food group.

As for good ol' Al, I think he's getting a bit of vindication, IMHO. It's time for other Knights of the Weather to ride forth.

Dan,
I didn't mean necessarily troops to help Australia, Africa, and now South
American current (no pun intended)weather disaster areas. But a little
further thought since then has led me in a somewhat different direction. Look
how the aid to Haiti has turned as we pass the first anniversary. Maybe
there's some hesitation to help elsewhere . . . just political failure?

I see last year tied the warmest year on record. With these extreme
weather conditions again, do you think Al Gore will ride again?
