The Adventures Of A Progressive In Redland - Chapter 1: Flushed

I always knew that the Greedy Red Trolls would try to drown us in  sorrow and financial misery, I could see it in their beady little glowing red eyes, and don't ask me about the foul smoke they continually blow out their posterior extruders!

I've heard it said that Red trolls have no heartbeat - if you put a stethoscope near their chest, it will freeze so badly your hand will turn to ice and fall off. There's a money-sucking black hole in there, powered by corporatite! (There's another black hole between their ears, powered by fauxnuzeite, too.)

Now they're trying to poison this small community's well with a big batch of corporatite, and suck it into Redland so they can be made desperate enough to eat the fauxnuzeit and drink cruelade until they have no brains and no heart.

The Greedy Red Trolls want to spread their nasty creed of Social Insecurity again, the vile red darkness of destitution and desperation and fear gilded with Orwellite.

Help us, Oh Be One Liberal! Bring your Light Savers of Green and Blue and vote the Greedy Red Trolls down, help us save this poor little hamlet before it, too falls to the true Red Menace!

------ PLEASE help a small community in our area approve an issue that will bring them a safe & secure source of water ------

VOTE AT THE YORK TOWN HALL MEETING
MONDAY DEC. 20 @ 6:50pm
(due to town hall rules, the doors to the building will locked at 7:00pm –
you may not be able to get in if you arrive after 7:00)

York Township is an area which is bordered by:
            North = North Ave.
South = 39th street in Downers Grove
            East = Interstate 294
            West = Route 53

This area includes the cities of: Elmhurst, Lombard, Villa Park, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, and sections of Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, and Westmont

The former York Center Community Co-op (79 homes) has a water system that was put into place 60+ years ago and which is now needing to be replaced.  That replacement cost will be completely borne by the residents of the community plus those other properties that have asked to be included in the water system such as the local volunteer fire department.  To assist in bringing down the cost, the community will be sharing a water storage facility with some new buildings being built east of Meyers Rd.  The York Township board has decided that the matter of having a water storage facility built on township property - behind the Knollcrest Funeral Home - should be decided by an open town hall vote.  Anyone who is a registered voter residing in York Township may vote on this issue.

That town hall vote will be held at the York Township building - 1502 S. Meyers Rd. on Monday Dec. 20th @ 6:50 pm.   People who are planning to vote simply need to bring a photo id to establish their York Township residency.

At this meeting any registered voters residing in York Township will have the opportunity to vote on this single issue.  So, ANY registered voter who lives in York Township can assist us in passing this crucial vote.  No other business will be conducted at this meeting, and comments are limited to 3 minutes per person, so the meeting should not be lengthy.

The reason that the water tower should be built on township property is that it is on high ground, it is close to the water system, and it is common to have water storage facilities in or near park districts.

This York Center group overwhelmingly voted (90+%) for the new water system.  If this issue does not pass at the Dec. 20th town hall meeting with a simple majority, the community remaining unincorporated is virtually impossible.  Our understanding is that the solution to their water issue would then be in jeopardy, more costly, and potentially passed on to Lombard.

Please plan to contact your friends and/or family in the area who are registered voters and let them know the need for all to attend the meeting so that this community can move forward with their project.

For more information about this historic community, see:

Medicare “Part E”- for Everybody - Thom Hartmann

Medicare “Part E”- for Everybody

http://www.truth-out.org/medicare-part-e-everybody65901

by: Thom Hartmann, Berrett-Koehler Publishers | Serialized Book
The Great Society is a place where every child can find knowledge to enrich his mind and to enlarge his talents. It is a place where the city of man serves not only the needs of the body and the demands of commerce but the desire for beauty and the hunger for community. It is a place where men are more concerned with the quality of their goals than the quantity of their goods.”
- Lyndon Baines Johnson
There are two important reasons for having a strong social safety net, one based in sound economic policy and the other in our common humanity. So it’s no surprise that the countries that have strong social safety nets tend to have resilient economies and a higher quality of life.

Untellable Truths - The Dearth Of Messaging Savvy On The Left

Untellable Truths

by: George Lakoff, t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed

http://www.truth-out.org/

Democrats of all stripes have been so focused on details of policy that they have surrendered public political discourse to conservatives, and with it the key to the nation's future. The differences between Democratic progressives and the president over the tax deal the president has made with Republicans is being argued from a materialist perspective. That perspective is real. It matters who gets how much money and how our money is spent. But what is being ignored is that the answer to material policy questions depends on how Americans understand the issues, that is, on how the issues are realized in the brains of our citizens. Such understanding is what determines political support or lack of it in all its forms, from voting to donations to political pressure to what is said in the media.  »

[PDI] FW: The people vs recession

-----Original Message-----
From: Ben Wikler - Avaaz.org <avaaz@avaaz.org>

Subject: The people vs recession

Dear friends,

With over 100 million thrown back into poverty and unemployment, experts agree we urgently need a global jobs plan to stop the recession. Gordon Brown has appealed to Avaaz for a massive outcry to persuade the G20 group of nations to act - watch Brown's appeal and sign the petition below:

The global recession has already plunged over 100 million people back into poverty and unemployment -- but this week, we could turn the tide of economic destruction.

Right now, French President Sarkozy, the new chair of the G20 group of the world's largest economies, is deciding the group's agenda. Over 300 top economists have urged the G20 to launch a coordinated global investment plan that saves millions from grinding hardship. But governments are doing the opposite - going it alone, slashing spending, and blaming each other.

President Sarkozy often seizes opportunities for dramatic popular action -- a massive outcry to him this week can persuade him to lead. Former UK PM Gordon Brown has urgently appealed to Avaaz to act - click below to watch his appeal, forward this email, and sign the petition for a Jobs and Justice plan, to be personally delivered to Sarkozy when we reach 500,000 voices:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/global_economy_gb_video_2/?vl

The global recession has already put 34 million people out of work and thrown 60 million people back into poverty, but governments across the world are doing exactly the wrong thing: proposing deep cuts to public services, implementing protectionist policies and reducing global development assistance – plans that destroy still more livelihoods and threaten our social fabric.

This is a familiar story: in the 1930s, amidst the Great Depression, governments sought to "reassure the markets" by slashing services and balancing budgets. But this backfired entirely: the cuts shut more and more of their citizens out of the economy, which only made the economic crisis worse. It's precisely when the markets are failing that governments must step in together to fill the gap.

We have already lost a great deal of ground, but it's not too late. The discredited economists who spurred the old bubble economy are giving way to a new wave of fresh thinkers -- including, surprisingly, the powerful International Monetary Fund, which is finally questioning its past insistence that countries in crisis cut their budgets. Brown and other prominent figures are making the rounds to world leaders to encourage this global plan. But they are the first to say that they need a mass movement to make it happen. Let's raise our voices now for leadership to create jobs and protect citizens from poverty:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/global_economy_gb_video_2/?vl

Economic collapses can threaten everything we care about. When countries turn inwards, they abandon cooperation on issues like climate change, fighting global poverty and nuclear disarmament. They blame each other and groups of their own citizens -- leading to xenophobia, conflict and, as in the 1930s, the rise of awful political movements like fascism. But cooperation can build success upon success: as we recognize that our destinies are interlinked, a joint recovery can pave the way to the world we all believe in. Let's seize this moment to raise a cry for that greater vision -- of an economy that lifts us all towards a brighter future.

With hope,

Ben, Stephanie, Ricken, Alex, Paula, Maria Paz, Alice and the rest of the Avaaz team

P.S. Winning a global economic revival will take time. But this moment, when the G20 is deciding its priorities, is a pivotal chance to make a difference. Join the call for a global jobs recovery here:

Congress to Debate Social Security Cuts

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OF SOCIAL SECURITY

SOCIAL SECURITY IS OUR MONEY

The Co-Chairs of the Fiscal Commission will recommend Deep Cuts to Social Security at their December 1st meeting.

WE WILL CALL THE SENATE ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30th

1-866-529-7630

Tell Congress to Keep their Hands Off Social Security.
You have done quite enough for the millionaires.

Social Security will have a surplus thru 2037.
Minor changes will keep this surplus for 75 years.
Eliminating the $106,000 cap on wages or ending the Bush Tax Cut for the top 2% will fund Social Security for 75 years.
Sample Script

I am calling to demand that Congress keep their hands off of social security.
DO NOT raise the retirement age or cut benefits.
Social Security has a surplus and helps all Americans.
Please do what is right for the American people, not just millionaires.
Thank you.

[PDI] FW: Death Penalty Bill PASSES Committee!

Having trouble reading this newsletter? Click here to see it in your browser.
Dear Daniel -

Yesterday crowds of people converged on the Capitol in Springfield to tell their representatives to end the death penalty in Illinois. This morning the House Judiciary Committee listened and passed our bill!

We've broken through the first big barrier! Next up is the House floor and they could vote as early as this afternoon.

We need to turn our dials up to eleven - and fast. We know you have already signed a petition but we need legislators to know that we are watching them every step of the way.

Please call and email your representatives today.

It won't take more than a minute or two and the payoff would be massive. We can put an end to ten years of moratorium limbo, save millions of dollars, and ensure that no more innocent people are sentenced to death. We know this can be done because it has been done before – in New York, New Jersey, and New Mexico in just the last five years.

We've come this far in Illinois because of your help. Now help us go all the way!

Towards justice,
Emma, on behalf of all of EJUSA

P.S. Want to do more? Organize your community. Forward this email to all of your friends in Illinois!

Equal Justice USA (EJUSA) is a national leader in the movement to halt executions. We work state by state to train and empower grassroots leaders to advocate for a more fair and humane criminal justice system. Will you help us build this movement?

Re: [PDI] Vote on Social Security cuts in the Senate 12/1/10 ?

Yes. Citizen Action Illinois and some others are urging a call-in.

The budget mess is being used by Congress to mow down social security.
There's no connection between the deficity and social security as far as I
know.

Hello Friends,

WSFPC is inviting people to a Visioning & Priorities Discussion to begin
to flesh out what steps we'll take TOGETHER to move this campaign forward.
We're especially hoping people from congregations, peace & justice
committees and representatives of other peace organizations will participate in
this discussion. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us this coming
Tuesday as we begin to outline and prioritize those steps.
WHAT: Visioning & Priorities Discussion
WHEN: Tuesday, November 30th, 7:00 pm
WHERE: Lombard Mennonite Church
528 E. Madison St, Lombard, IL
Looking forward to working with you, to build an inspired campaign -
together,
-Dave Martin

Unemployed Workers, Small Business People Mobilize Calls to Congress for Unemployment Benefits, Jobs

What: Press Conference and Protest on Unemployment Insurance

Who: Chicago Jobs with Justice Unemployed Workers Council and Illinois Main Street Alliance

Where: State of Illinois Building, 100 W. Randolph

When: Tuesday, November 16, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

On
Tuesday, unemployed workers will join with small business owners and
others concerned with the lack of support for America's unemployed
workers. Unemployed workers will call on Congress to pass an extension
of Unemployment Benefits with the same speed they passed bailouts for
Wall Street. Unemployed Workers Council and the Illinois Main Street
Alliance want to preserve this lifeline to middle class families, small
business and the economy.

Anthony
Scorzo, 27, a laid off union electrician from Chicago, says, "Congress
has to gets its priorities straight. Why are they bailing out
millionaires with tax breaks and cutting my benefits while I look for
work and go to school?"

"Jobs
produce customers, period," stated Dan Sherry of the Illinois Main
Street Alliance. "When unemployed workers become impoverished without
any support, small business will continue to lose customers and close."

So. In the last session of Congress the House passed legislation that the
enate never did anything with.
Is it likely that the Senate will be able to block legislation passed by the
ouse after the new Congress is sworn in?
The Republican majority in the House can pass all kinds of crazy big-brother,
mall-minded stuff and the nation can get a chance to judge the agenda without
orrying about any of it becoming law.

[PDI] Honoring our Veterans: Wreaths Across America , Anti- Death Penalty Bus to Springfield this Tuesday

Wreaths lay honors on veterans

This Veterans Day, consider honoring someone who served and also cheering our troops.

There are 25,000 veterans laid to rest at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Sponsoring a wreath is $15 and part of that donation would go to send packages to troops overseas. Read on...

http://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/<http://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/>
Wreaths lay honors on veterans
Nov 4, 2010 09:14AM

Operation Care Package (OCP) needs your help in remembering those who valiantly served our country.

Once again, OCP will honor those buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery (ALNC) with a short ceremony and wreath laying planned for 11 a.m. Dec. 11.

Last year, OCP had more than 2,500 wreaths donated to the cemetery. But more than 25,000 veterans are buried there, so there is much more work to do.

Wreath sponsorships purchased through Nov. 24 will be placed on veterans' graves in 2010; orders placed later we be laid in 2011.

A wreath costs $15. Checks can be made payable to Wreaths Across America (WAA) and sent to: OCP Wreath Project, 611 Wilcox St., Joliet, IL 60435.

If someone has a loved one buried at Abraham Lincoln Cemetery, OCP volunteers will be happy to lay a wreath at that family member's grave. Family must include the veteran's full name, section and number when placing the order through OCP.

Wreaths also can be purchased at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. WAA cannot accommodate grave-specific requests, so going through OCP is the only option. If ordering through WAA, make sure you include OCP's group ID number: ILOCP 0001. WAA will donate $5 back to OCP for every wreath purchased if the ID number is used. That money will then be used to help send Christmas packages to troops overseas.

OCP has set a goal of laying 10,000 wreaths on Dec. 11. Besides sponsoring wreaths, volunteers also are needed to help lay wreaths, get sponsors for wreaths and help with donations of food for a luncheon afterward.

So if you know of a group, organization or individual who would like to sponsor or lay wreaths, let them know to place their orders soon - and please help spread the word.

Active military members or veterans are needed to stand in the 125-flag line during the ceremony. If interested, call Debbie at 815-723-6960 or e-mail proudarmysis4@sbcglobal.net.

Tezak's Home to Celebrate Life is another organization that is sponsoring Wreath's Across America this year. To sponsor a wreath or for information, call Tezak's at 815-722-0524 or stop in at 1211 Plainfield Road in Joliet to fill out a form.

Re: [PDI] House and Senate

How do we know the outcome of our elections (since 2000) when we really do
not know several things:

1) The criteria, methodology for polling, especially of close elections
2) That the election machines are producing correct tally, knowing that
they can be manipulated or corrupted
3) That absent exit polls for races, which have been historically 99.5 or
more accurate in the past, we are to blindly trust the tallies from the
election machines

Until we have citizen oversight of hand counted paper ballots in the
precinct on election day, we can have NO confidence that any election is
correct.

If that is the case, Obama should have had a larger majority in 2008, but
that was not reflected in the outcome of those elected to Congress. He
would have been able to push through legislation, rather than fight the
battles that he had to endure.

We need publicly financed elections, a responsive media, and ballot
integrity to push the a progressive agenda forward. If we as progressives
JUST concentrate on those three things, *everything else* will fall into
place.

We can do this. Hammer your Illinois and US Congressional Reps with phone
calls telling them to support the Fair Elections Now Act. Put a reminder on
your phone with their phone numbers. Put them on speed dial. Call them.

And like a shampoo bottle instructions, rinse and repeat. Every Day.

We have gotten through worse--like Bush and Cheney.
