[PDI] Rove “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore”

*** SENT THROUGH PDI MAILING LIST ***
http://myplayfulself.com/wordpress/archives/16230

This page makes the claim that Anonymous locked Karl Rove's computer
operatives out of the system they had put into place to steal the U.S.
election.

I've been saying since 2008 that the Democrats found better hackers than
the Republicans as a mild joke, but if this page is to be believed, I was
closer to the truth than I knew.

Dan

[PDI] "No one should get rich off of public service!" If you agree please pass it on.

*** SENT THROUGH PDI MAILING LIST ***

DuPage County Forest Preserve Commissioners accept unlimited campaign contributions from companies doing business with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. This is unethical and should be illegal!

Here are specific examples where one of the DuPage County Forest Preserve Commissioners (Joe Cantore from District 2) has accepted unlimited campaign contributions from companies where he has approved pricing and many times no bid contracts worth hundreds of thousands totaling millions of our tax dollars. "Accepting any campaign contributions from any companies doing business with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is unethical. It should be illegal" states Don Kirchenberg, candidate for Forest Preserve Commissioner, District 2. "I have not and will not accept any monies from any company doing business with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County."

These donations were reported to the IL State Board of Elections for contributions received in the past few years. Don Kirchenberg explains "the recent contributions to Commissioner Cantore from his fundraiser held in October, 2012 will not have to be reported until year end. Here are enough examples that show a bad pattern that we believe is wrong."

· Cantore reported $2,800.00 in campaign contributions from Kuhn Mitchell Moss a Naperville law firm. In the past two years, Cantore has approved Forest Preserve payments in no-bid contracts to Kuhn Mitchell Moss in an amount exceeding $640,000 for legal services.

· Cantore reported $1,000.00 in campaign contributions from Chapman & Cutler a Chicago law firm. In the past two years, Cantore has approved Forest Preserve payments in no-bid contracts to Chapman & Cutler in an amount exceeding $175,000 for legal services.

· Cantore reported $900.00 in campaign contributions from Day & Robert PC a Naperville law firm. In the past two years, Cantore has approved Forest Preserve payments in no-bid contracts to Day & Robert in an amount exceeding $325,000 for legal services.

· Cantore reported $750.00 in campaign contributions from Wight Architects and its owners. In the past two years, Cantore has approved Forest Preserve payments in no-bid contracts to Wight Architects in an amount exceeding $300,000 for design work for development (new building, etc) at Willowbrook Forest Preserve.

· Cantore reported $850.00 in campaign contributions from Christopher Burke Engineering. In the past two years, Cantore has approved Forest Preserve payments in no-bid contracts to Christopher Burke Engineering in an amount exceeding $150,000.

· Cantore reported $350.00 in campaign contributions from Coffman Truck Sales owner Frank Coffman. In the past two years, Cantore has approved Forest Preserve payments in no-bid contracts to Coffman Truck Sales for the purchase of truck parts in an amount exceeding $30,000.

There are additional examples for Commissioner Cantore and with the other Commissioners. "We need a rule that stops these unethical campaign contributions. As a Commissioner I would work to pass a rule making these contributions illegal. No one should get rich from public service." concluded Don Kirchenberg, candidate for Forest Preserve Commissioner, District 2 DuPage County.

For more info go www.citizensforkirchenberg.com Please pass along this email to anyone across DuPage County because this problem and bad practice is true for all the Forest Preserve Commissioners.

A sand mine that will cut off water flow to some of the most beautiful and

EFF Sues for Answers About Illegal Government Email and Phone Call Surveillance

EFF sued the Department of Justice, demanding answers about illegal email and telephone call surveillance at the National Security Agency.

A government official publicly disclosed that the National Security Agency's surveillance program had gone further than what the law permits, with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court issuing at least one ruling calling the NSA's actions unconstitutional. The government further disclosed that the court had determined the government's surveillance violated the spirit of the law on at least one occasion.

EFF's Freedom of Information Act lawsuit seeks disclosure of any written opinions or orders from FISC discussing illegal government surveillance, as well as any briefings to Congress about those violations.

Congressmen Demand USTR Tell American People What's Going on With TPP

U.S. Representatives Ron Wyden and Darrell Issa insist that the American people have a right to know what the U.S. is seeking in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) with respect to intellectual property rights.

Copyright's Robot Wars Heat Up as Algorithms Block Live-Streams First and Ask Questions Later

Copyright's robot wars have burst onto the scene of streaming video sites, silencing live feeds with bogus infringement accusations and no human oversight. Two examples from just the past week show the danger that lies ahead if copyright enforcement is left to bots alone.

EFF Updates

Rojadirecta: The Government Reverses Course and Returns Domains Without Explanation. Again.

The government has decided to return two domain names it improperly seized and held in its possession for well over a year, without so much as an explanation. This time, it was Rojadirecta.com and Rojadirecta.org, Puerto 80's popular sports streaming sites, which the government seized back in February 2011.

Members of Congress Demand Answers for Homeland Security's Unjust Domain Name Seizures

A bipartisan group of Representatives, led by Rep. Zoe Lofgren, sent a pointed letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and the Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano protesting the recent spat of domain name seizures -- executed on dubious copyright grounds -- that have been censoring websites with no due process.

Copyright Trolls' Bogus "Negligence" Theory Thrown Out Of Court Again

Judges on both coasts of the U.S. have now rejected one of the copyright trolls' favorite tactics -- suing an Internet subscriber for "negligence" when someone else allegedly downloaded a movie illegally over their wireless connection.

Is Congress Getting Ready to Take on Patent Trolls?

The Congressional Research Service recently released a report on the effects of patent trolls on innovation and the economy. The study presents a pretty thorough analysis of the patent troll problem, but what's striking is its existence at all. Could it be that Congress is really starting to pay attention when it comes to fixing the broken patent system?

EFF Asks Appeals Court to Rehear Cell Site Tracking Case

EFF and a number of other civil liberties organizations joined together in an amicus brief to ask the Sixth Circuit to reconsider its decision that law enforcement did not need a search warrant to track a cell phone in real time.

Service Agreements Kill Privacy, But Can They Create It Too?

A recent case decided by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals highlights the increasing way constitutional rights are adjudicated when it comes to data stored by other companies: through the service agreement a user enters into with a company.

Research Sheds Light On Scary New Surveillance Apps for Smartphones

Following on the heels of last month's first-ever public analysis of the elusive spyware FinSpy, security researchers at Citizen Lab have released an analysis of samples that appear to be FinSpy Mobile, the smartphone component in the FinFisher toolkit.

EFF Continues Support of OWS Protester & Twitter As Case Is Appealed

Does the government need a search warrant to get information about your Twitter activity -- information like deleted tweets, other users you communicate with, and the list of IP addresses you used to connect to the service? Today we joined a coalition of civil liberties groups in telling a New York appeals court that the answer to that question is yes.

Don't Wait for the UK Snoopers' Charter to Pass: Encrypt Wikipedia Now

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has spoken out against the UK Snoopers' Bill, a data retention bill that, as Techdirt explained, "would require ISPs to record key information about every email sent and Web site visited by UK citizens, and mobile phone companies to log all their calls." Wales testified that, if the bill passed, he would move to encrypt all of Wikipedia's connections with Britain.

Congressional Report on US and TPP

The Congressional Research Service has published a 55-page analysis of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP). While the CRS does not clarify if it had access to the complete current TPP text, they examine TPP within the broader context of multilateral and bilateral trade relations and international market access.

Germany squares off against Facebook on privacy; "Constant Surveillance" is back on the agenda in Australia; and UK police admit surveillance cameras are patchy and sometimes ineffective.

The Battle for Privacy Intensifies in Australia

Australians are fending off threats to their right to privacy from all directions. First, there was Australian Attorney General Nicola Roxon's push to expand government online surveillance powers. Then the Australian Senate approved the Cybercrime Legislation Amendment Bill 2011, granting authorities the power to require phone and Internet providers to store up to 180 days worth of personal communications data.

[PDI] Fwd: Stop the Trap!

*** SENT THROUGH PDI MAILING LIST ***
Anyone know if this is true?

Dear Daniel,

Right now, industry lobbyists and bureaucrats are putting the final touches
on an international trade agreement that could strip away many of our
Internet freedoms and cast ordinary Internet users as criminals.

The deal is being pushed forward in a series of closed-door meetings away
from the scrutiny of digital rights advocates and Internet users. We've
stopped bad Internet policies like this before. Now it's time to stop the
Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).

* Don't Let the TPP Trap You. Stop This Deal
Today.<http://act.freepress.net/go/11907?t=1&akid=3829.9916736.nRFruj>
*

Free Press is partnering with our friends at
OpenMedia.ca<http://act.freepress.net/go/11908?t=2&akid=3829.9916736.nRFruj>to
alert users about this bad deal. If approved the TPP would:

- Criminalize some everyday Internet use.
- Force service providers to collect and hand over your private
data without user protections.
- Give media conglomerates the *power to fine you for Internet use*,
remove online content — including entire websites — and even
terminate your
Internet access!

To learn more about the TPP, visit
stopthetrap.net<http://act.freepress.net/go/11909?t=3&akid=3829.9916736.nRFruj>
.

OpenMedia.ca rightly calls the TPP an "Internet trap."1 If it passes,
TPPcould criminalize ordinary
Internet actions — like linking to certain content or sites.

This is ridiculous. Governments around the world need to hear from Internet
users like you before the TPP becomes the law of the Web:

* Don't let the TPP trap
you.<http://act.freepress.net/go/11907?t=4&akid=3829.9916736.nRFruj>

Thank you,

Josh, Tim and the rest of the Free Press Action Fund team

[PDI] Update/Reminder: A Discussion of the Expanding Role of Money in Politics

*** SENT THROUGH PDI MAILING LIST ***
Update/Reminder: A Discussion of the Expanding Role of Money in Politics

(Please note that after we had settled on the date and time for this event, Thursday, September 6, 7-9 pm, we found that it conflicted with the Obama acceptance speech at the Democratic convention. Nevertheless we will hold the panel discussion as originally scheduled. Thus we will have the event even if very few people attend. Citizens may record Obama's speech for viewing later; also the Democrats may still change the time of the Obama speech).

For more information, contact:
Robert Tracy, Director, Elmhurst MovetoAmend
166 E. Lake St., Unit F
Elmhurst, IL 60126
Email: Elmhurst@MoveToAmend.org (you may need to copy this email address into your email program)
Phone: 630-484-1555

In 2010, the Supreme Court decided (5 to 4) Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission to uphold freedom of speech of corporations in political elections. They decided that: 1) corporations are persons and merit protection under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, and 2) money equals speech.

The Court concluded that corporations have the right to spend money without limit in political elections from their general treasuries, thereby eliminating the effectiveness of existing disclosure regulations. There should be no surprise that corporations and wealthy persons are now spending huge amounts of money to influence elections. A conservative estimate indicates $2 to $5 billion may be spent during this election season.

Many feel that our Democracy and Government, meaning the politicians, are being bought by wealthy individual and corporate interests in an unprecedented way since the Citizens United ruling. What are the full implications of the ruling, and what can citizens do to help make Democracy healthier?

What: Maryam Judar, community lawyer at Citizen Advocacy Center, will moderate a non-partisan discussion of the Expanding Role of Money in Politics. One topic to be included: THE CITIZENS UNITED DECISION: UPHOLDING FREE SPEECH OR DIMINISHING DEMOCRACY?

When: Thursday, September 6, 7-9 pm
Where: 182 N. York Street, Elmhurst, IL (Citizen Advocacy Center)
RSVP: Phone 630-833-4080 or Email cac@citizenadvocacycenter.org

> In 2010, the Supreme Court decided (5 to 4) Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission.
>
>
>
(A conservative estimate indicates $2 to $5 billion may be spent during this election season.)
