Daniel,

We just got an email from one of our members telling us, "I must say that
your email was about the* scariest thing I ever read, and I'm 74 and enjoy
science fiction movies."*

Like her, you're one of nearly *75,000 people who have sent a message* calling
on world leaders and trade representatives to come clean about the
Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

In fact, we've sent so many messages to world leaders negotiating this
top-secret agreement, that we've literally *filled their inboxes to capacity
* letting them know we won't be left in the dark about this agreement. Due
the huge volume of emails we sent, some of your messages may have bounced,
and we apologize if there was any confusion, but this means that *we're
making a huge impact*.

Our partners at Public Citizen, who helped kick-start it all by leaking
proposed chapters of the agreement, are going to *deliver your petitions in
San Diego next week*.

The biggest problem with this treaty is that, due to the extreme secrecy
surrounding it, only a few people have heard of it. But that is starting to
change.

The Nation just released a piece on it -- "NAFTA on Steroids" -- that you
should totally read and tell all your friends about.
<http://act.sumofus.org/go/559?t=1&akid=607.596245.-89-7v>

*We can and are helping push the TPP further into the public eye *by
sharing the news and starting the opposition now, before the next round of
talks begin. We hope that this growing awareness is just the tip of the
iceberg.

Onward,

--Emma, Kaytee, and the Rest of Us

P.S. In case The Nation article wasn't enough for you, we wanted to leave
you with a few more to read over the weekend:

[PDI] The worst treaty in history

*** SENT THROUGH PDI MAILING LIST ***

Date: Jun 27, 2012 2:25 PM
Subject: The worst treaty in history
To: "Daniel A. Stafford" <aquarianm@gmail.com>

*These people are negotiating a terrifying new treaty that would give
unprecedented new "rights" to corporations. Help us stop them.*

<http://act.sumofus.org/go/546?t=1&akid=602.596245._dVmHy>

[image: Click to Add Your
Name]<http://act.sumofus.org/go/546?t=2&akid=602.596245._dVmHy>

Daniel,

In the back of a swanky San Diego hotel, corporate lobbyists are gathering
next week to negotiate an ultra-secret trade deal that will empower
*corporations
to sue our governments if they dare pass any laws that might infringe on
profits.*

If that's not hitting close enough to home, then check this out -- newly
leaked secret documents show that if the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
becomes law, *you could be dragged to court and receive a large fine simply
for clicking on the wrong link.*

But here's the good news:* We can actually stop this.* The corporations are
counting on ramming the treaty through as quickly and secretly as possible
-- before the public and the media even start paying attention. That's why
we're partnering with pro-internet organization OpenMedia.ca: If we speak
up with a unified voice now, we can force participating governments to come
clean.

Tell national leaders and trade representatives negotiating the TPP in
secret that we won't let them ambush us with a hidden agenda to* let
corporations censor our internet*, and gain more power over our lives.

Sign our urgent petition at StopTheTrap.net
today!<http://act.sumofus.org/go/546?t=3&akid=602.596245._dVmHy>

*The only reason that we know anything about these top-secret talks is
because two chapters of the draft agreement were just leaked.* Now, we know
that drug companies will be able to stop generic medicine from being
produced -- which means that a young girl with HIV will die because her
family can't afford the medicine any more. And a foreign-owned oil company
will be able to sue your democratically-elected government simply for
strengthening environmental regulations that will threaten its profits.

But this treaty also threatens to impose* dangerous censorship that would
threaten the open foundation of the Internet.* Service providers could be
forced to collect and hand over our private data *Internet users could be
turned into criminals*. Big media conglomerates would be given the power to
fine us for our Internet use, remove online content--even entire
websites--and *cut off our Internet access completely*.

Corporate lawyers are trying to avoid at all costs us knowing about the
controversial provisions in the agreement, because it will draw criticism
from citizens and businesses, making reaching an agreement more difficult.
That's why we need a massive public outcry now to make sure that our
leaders know that we're watching.

Sign the urgent petition now to national leaders and trade representatives
before next week's talks begin. Your signature will send a message to each
country's leaders.<http://act.sumofus.org/go/546?t=4&akid=602.596245._dVmHy>

Thanks for making sure that people come before corporate profits,

--Emma, Kaytee, Taren and the rest of us

******

*Background Information*

*What is the Trans-Pacific Partnership? Who is participating?*

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a multilateral free trade agreement that
aims to further liberalize the economies of the Asia-Pacific region.
Currently, 11 countries are party to the negotiations including the United
States, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru,
Singapore, and Vietnam. The U.S. joined the talks in November, 2009, and
both Canada and Mexico will be taking part in the 13th round of
negotiations that begin on July 2, 2012. By this time next year, Japan is
expected to join. The Agreement is designed to be expandable to accommodate
new members.

*What provisions are in the treaty?*

Since the text is currently top secret, there is no way to tell the full
scope of the treaty, but two leaked chapters -- the Intellectual Property
and Investment chapters -- give sobering glimpses into the treaty.

The agreement has been accused of being excessively restrictive, providing
intellectual property restraints beyond those in other free trade
agreements like the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). In
developing countries like Vietnam, TPP could even limit access to
affordable medication, including generic drugs.

Under the TPP, corporations would gain an array of privileges:

- Rights to acquire land, natural resources, factories without
government review
- Risks and costs of offshoring to low wage countries eliminated
- Special guaranteed "minimum standard of treatment" for relocating firms
- Compensation for loss of "expected future profits" from health, labor
environmental, laws (indirect or "regulatory" takings compensation)
- Right to move capital without limits
- New rights cover vast definition of investment: intellectual property,
permits, derivatives
- Ban performance requirements, domestic content rules. Absolute ban,
not only when applied to investors from signatory countries

The TPP will impose a set of extreme foreign investor privileges and rights
and their private enforcement through the notorious "investor-state"
system. This system elevates individual corporations and investors to equal
standing with each TPP signatory country's government- and above all of us
citizens.

Under this regime, foreign investors can skirt domestic courts and laws,
and sue governments directly before tribunals of three private sector
lawyers operating under World Bank and UN rules to demand taxpayer
compensation for any domestic law that investors believe will diminish
their "expected future profits".

According to a leaked version of the TPP's Intellectual Property Rights
chapter, the TPP would:

- Criminalize some everyday uses of the Internet,
- Force service providers to collect and hand over your private data
without privacy safeguards, and
- Give media conglomerates more power to send you fines in the mail,
remove online content—including entire websites—and even terminate your
access to the Internet.

Dear Catherine,

As a candidate, Obama promised to renegotiate NAFTA, the trade deal that
has undermined workers and the environment.

As president, Obama has pushed through corporate trade agreements that
build on the NAFTA model -- including with South Korea, Colombia and Panama.

*Stop him before he does
worse.*<http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=rvG4NwvaqVqoT%2FUmplFMcrk7GX9xEpDC>

Now leaks of negotiations with eight Pacific countries reveal Obama's
intention to out-NAFTA NAFTA.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal has been negotiated in secret
(except for 600 corporate advisors). The TPP would:

- reward outsourcing of jobs to lower-wage countries;
- give foreign corporations immunity from U.S. laws;
- allow foreign corporations to challenge U.S. laws in foreign (secret)
tribunals; and
- wipe out national protections for workers or the environment.

U.S. negotiators are pushing these worse-than-NAFTA measures on the Pacific
countries.

*Take a minute to tell President Obama (and Congress) that we won't stand
for it. *<http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=CWHMyvS0qx59BrkGa%2FGgkrk7GX9xEpDC>

[PDI] Fwd: 2.8 billion Twinkies

*** SENT THROUGH PDI MAILING LIST ***
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: "Brian Imus, Illinois PIRG State Director" <action@illinoispirg.org>
Date: Jun 19, 2012 1:01 PM
Subject: 2.8 billion Twinkies
To: <aquarianm@gmail.com>

[image: Click here to take
action]<http://www.webaction.org/site/R?i=DYJy6WA2LBdd75ElgkJfzw>Hi
Daniel,

Some of the money that you and I pay in taxes ends up in Twinkies.

More than $1 billion in tax subsidies help pay for junk food ingredients
like high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils that are main
ingredients in Twinkies, soda and thousands of other junk food products. [1]

That's the equivalent of 2.8 billion Twinkies every year — which, if you
laid on the road, could *pave a highway 63 feet wide from Chicago to
Springfield and back!*

*Can you add your name to our petition to Congress to end junk food
subsidies? <http://www.webaction.org/site/R?i=vRANx6fPeeNWceLCSx3rMA>*

Congress is debating these subsidies right now, and Big Ag is lobbying hard
to keep them before they expire in August. That's why we're ramping up our
efforts this summer — and it all starts with your signature.

Working with our partner groups across the country, we're hoping to get
100,000 signatures — that means we need 10,000 from Illinoisans. We need
your help to hit these ambitious goals.

*Childhood obesity has quadrupled over the last 40 years*. Surely the time
has come to stop handing over billions of dollars to giant agribusinesses
to help subsidize junk food. [2]

Here's the petition:

*Please put an end to junk food subsidies. Since 1995, $17 billion in
subsidies to big agribusiness companies have gone to high-fructose corn
syrup and other junk food ingredients. *

*Especially in light of the epidemic of childhood obesity in this country,
these subsidies are unacceptable. Please cut them from the federal budget
and the reauthorization of the Farm Bill.*

It might seem like a no-brainer to get rid of these ridiculous subsidies,
but it's been an uphill battle — because of giant agribusinesses like
Cargill and Monsanto and their lobbying machine. Big Ag spent $200 million
on lobbying and campaign contributions in 2008. [3]

But despite the fact that they've got deep pockets, we know that no one in
Congress wants to be seen standing up for taxpayer giveaways to junk food.
With public concern about obesity and federal spending at all time highs,
public support can help us finally beat Big Ag and end subsidies for junk
food.

Already we've made progress. We've talked to more than 800,000 people
across the country and earned bipartisan support.

*Can you add your name to our
petition?<http://www.webaction.org/site/R?i=4GZ-n3RuE2Mf0sxjtTtavw>

[PDI] "Agent Orange" corn?

*** SENT THROUGH PDI MAILING LIST ***
Ready for what's next from Dow Chemicals? GE crops modified to be
resistant to the herbicide that's a main ingredient in Agent Orange!

The herbicide, 2,4-D, is linked to cancer, reproductive problems, and
Parkinson's and is banned entirely in parts of Canada and Europe. And yet
the USDA seems ready to approve the new GMO Corn and Soybeans, unleashing
a major increase in the use of 2,4-D.

Now, the EPA is considering stepping in to stop or restrict the
application of 2,4-D, which would be a major blow to Dow's Agent Orange
veggies.

Join me in urging the EPA to reject Dow's plans to spray this incredibly
toxic herbicide. Submit a comment here:

[PDI] URGENT ALERT: Stop Sen. Inhofe's Clean Air Attack

Dear Daniel,

[image: Coal Pollution]<http://support.edf.org/site/R?i=HysnqK4aVVWLGgTjO6M1vg>

*Don't let a global warming denier take away your right to clean
air<http://support.edf.org/site/R?i=V_QaO4hTO9l7mXCkVljdwg>
*.

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), Congress's leading global warming denier, is
stepping us his efforts *to deny your right to breathe cleaner air that
won't kill you or make you sick*.

*Please take action
today<http://support.edf.org/site/R?i=x5Ro-RjytLRdiTHT8lpccw>
*. Help us stop the Inhofe toxic air bill, which would wipe the EPA's
life-saving Mercury and Air Toxics Standards off the books and punch a huge
hole through our clean air protections.

*The vote could happen as soon as Wednesday, so we urgently need your help
more than ever! <http://support.edf.org/site/R?i=r36QIxhw7JxJ2wCv1GqiGw>*

Sen. Inhofe's bill — S.J. Res 37 — would use the obscure Congressional
Review Act to block EPA's new emission standards for hazardous mercury and
other toxic air pollution.

But that's not all. *If enacted, this bill would also forever prohibit the
EPA from adopting substantially similar clean air standards in the future.*

These invaluable standards have been in the works for more than two decades!

- They will *prevent up to 11,000 premature deaths* every year.
- They will *protect our kids from dangerous exposure to toxic mercury
pollution*, which can cause brain damage in infants and young children.
- And they will *save the U.S. economy tens of billions of dollars* in
avoided health costs every year while *putting up to 117,000 Americans
to work* installing pollution control technologies between now and 2015.

*Please take action today to help us ensure these benefits become a
reality.<http://support.edf.org/site/R?i=gE1WRbQ38LOEhDXTVcI8OQ>
*

Americans want this rule. Last year, over 800,000 Americans submitted
comments to the EPA in support of these landmark standards.

But now, a small group of power industry lobbyists and their allies in the
Senate are putting pressure on Senators to support Inhofe's toxic air
assault to wipe these life-saving, job-creating standards off the books.

*This could happen in the next few days. We can't let them win* — not with
the stakes so high.

*Please take action
today<http://support.edf.org/site/R?i=vo_TRbcWU3aHijWx1L-irQ>
*. Don't let Sen. Inhofe and the Dirty Air Lobby deny your right to clean,
healthy air that won't kill you or make you sick.

Sen. Inhofe claims to have the number of signatures he needs to force a
vote on the floor of the Senate this week. And, unlike most other Senate
action, this bill filed under the Congressional Review Act only requires 51
votes.

Help us make sure a majority of the Senate stands with our kids and
families against this toxic air assault.

*Please take action
today<http://support.edf.org/site/R?i=d8lwjRU1uecazpxThZPEbw>
*.

Dear Daniel,

In a stunning display of its shameful allegiance to the dirty coal
industry, the Illinois legislature voted to force Illinois residents to
foot the bill for a $3 billion coal gasification plant on Chicago's
southeast side.1

Coal gasification is an incredibly dirty, expensive and energy-intensive
process that creates more than twice the climate pollution of conventional
dirty coal plants.

Last month, more than 4,500 CREDO activists told the Illinois Commerce
Commission (ICC) to reject the Leucadia Corporation's proposed coal
gasification boondoggle — *but the state legislature bypassed the ICC's
normal decision making, passing a bill to force local utilities to buy the
dirty coal gas from Leucadia at more than three times the normal price.2*

Our last and only chance to stop this disastrous boondoggle is to convince
Governor Quinn to veto SB 3766.

*Tell Governor Quinn: Protect Illinois residents by vetoing SB 3766. Click
here to automatically sign the petition.*
<http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=6901308&p=leucadia_veto&id=41877-2914033-ffR8Wox&t=8>

As If ripping off Illinois consumers by forcing them to pay for this costly
project isn't bad enough, allowing the Leucadia plant to move forward would
also be an environmental nightmare, using more than 10 million gallons of
water from the Calumet River each day.3

*To make matters worse, the proposed location for the plant is just two
blocks from Washington High School, where thousands of students would be
subjected to the plant's dangerous air pollution.*

The Leucadia coal gasification boondoggle is a lose-lose proposition that
Illinois residents could be paying the price for in higher utility bills
and harmful air pollution for decades. This is our last chance to urge
Governor Quinn to stand up for Illinois residents, and stop the dirty,
expensive giveaway SB 3766.

Dear Catherine,

We've become a nation that callously kills. Meticulous researchers have
documented that U.S. drones are killing many innocent civilians in
Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere. Drones are making the world less stable and
creating new enemies. *We must end the use of weaponized drones*.

RootsAction and our allies will deliver this petition to:

- *the United Nations Secretary General*, urging him to investigate the
concerns of Navi Pillay, the U.N.'s top human rights official, that drone
attacks violate international law -- and to ultimately pursue sanctions
against nations using, possessing, or manufacturing weaponized drones;
- *the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court*, petitioning him
to investigate grounds for the criminal prosecution of those responsible

Greetings Daniel ;

As I am sure you know by now, one person, Sheldon Adelson, has donated 31
Million dollars to presidential candidates just this year. If money is
speech then Mr Adleson has the worlds largest Marshall Stack while 99.9% of
Americans can only muster a hoarse whisper. The concerns of a billionaire
casino owner are different then the concerns of most citizens. For
democracy is to survive we must change that dynamic.

Politics has never changed of its own accord. It has always and only
changed when the public is energized enough to make change inevitable.

Move to Amend Kane needs your help. We are attempting to place an advisory
referendum on the Kane County ballot this November. We are in great need
of your help to accomplish this.

Please join us on Tuesday June 19 at the First Congregational Church in
Geneva, at the corner of 4th and Hamilton, just one block North of Rt 38,

*

Dear Daniel,

This is shocking, even for our U.S. Congress.

If a female employee of the U.S. State Department is raped while serving
abroad in Afghanistan, her federal health plan will pay for an abortion
should she become pregnant. However if a woman serving abroad as a member
of the U.S. military is raped, her military health plan will NOT provide
for an abortion if she becomes pregnant as a result of that violent and
reprehensible act.

According to a recent report from Mother Jones,1 the Pentagon has an even
more drastic policy on access to abortion than the Hyde Amendment which
bans the use of federal funds for abortion care unless a woman has been the
victim of rape, incest or she could literally die unless she her pregnancy
is terminated.

This disparity is so unsettling that the Senate Armed Services Committee
recently passed a proposal that would fix this loophole in federal law on a
rare bipartisan vote. But the extremists in Congress will almost certainly
strip this proposal from the National Defense Authorization Act when it
comes up for a vote in the House. The only way we can hope to stop it is

*

According to Kate Sheppard's report in *Mother Jones*,2 there are 200,000
women serving on active duty in our military and in 2011 alone there were
471 reported instances of rape. But with the Pentagon itself estimating
that only 13.5% of rapes are officially reported, that means around 3,500
service members are raped per year.

Women who are serving on military bases abroad can't simply go to their
local Planned Parenthood should they seek an abortion after finding
themselves pregnant as a result of rape. And if there hasn't been a formal
finding of rape, a rape survivor in the military can't even pay to have the
procedure done in the medical facility on base. Many women serving in our
armed forces are stationed in foreign countries where safe abortion care is
not easily obtained outside our military bases. And it may not be possible
or affordable for a raped woman soldier to travel to the United States in
order to receive the care she needs. Our policies need to be reformed to
ensure that women in the military who have been raped have access to the
medical care they need.

As Senator Jean Shaheen who introduced the proposal change to this heinous
policy explained to *Mother Jones*, "Most of the women affected here are
enlisted women who are making about $18,000 a year. They're young, they
don't have access to a lot of resources. Many of them are overseas."

*

A handful of Republicans in the Senate realized that protecting rape
survivors is not a partisan issue and joined Democrats to pass this bill
out of committee and work to provide relief to women in our armed services.
But their colleagues in the House will not join them in helping to pass
this much needed bill unless we force them to take action. We need to tell
Republicans as well as anti-choice Democrats in the House (including the
so-called Stupak Democrats who voted against women's reproductive health in
the Affordable Care Act)3 that we cannot let this policy stand.

CREDO is a staunch supporter of a woman's right to choose and we will
continue to work for the repeal of the Hyde Amendment. But until then, even
in our polarized Congress which is packed with anti-choice zealots, there
are some lines that Republicans and anti-choice Democrats should be very
afraid to cross. This is one of them. We cannot stand by and let women
serving in the U.S. military be subjected to a stricter standard for
abortion access than the already horribly restrictive Hyde Amendment.

[PDI] Stop Tax Breaks For Job Killers

Stop Tax Breaks For Job Killers

Dear Daniel,
Where are the jobs?
[image: Image Alt

*Stop tax breaks for job killers. Sign our petition
today!*<http://act.truemajority.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=imZlNES06MjksIwnv%2BNRyLjPnI6UkjKv>
[image:
add your voice]<http://act.truemajority.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=f5LB2gOiZ1kTHBfYKX9NO7jPnI6UkjKv>

Should we keep giving tax breaks to U.S. companies to shift jobs overseas?
Incredibly, that's now a debate in Washington.

The American middle class is getting crushed and closed off, while huge
corporations get tax breaks for shipping our jobs overseas.

Here's just one example: General Electric paid no – zilch, nada, zero –
federal income taxes while making more than $10 billion in profits and
shipping thousands of jobs overseas. GE has parked $102 billion in profits
off-shore. And GE is far from alone. American companies are sitting on some
$1.2 trillion in off-shore profits.1

*That's ridiculous. **Will you join us to put an end to this outrageous tax
giveaway?*<http://act.truemajority.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=qn6Wr3nbMRjYI%2BXuCvGFQbjPnI6UkjKv>

In early July, the U.S. Senate will vote on the Bring Jobs Home Act, which
will directly reward companies that create jobs here in the U.S. instead of
sending them away.

*This should be a no-brainer – but with Republicans in lock-step
opposition, we need you to sign our petition in support of the
bill.*<http://act.truemajority.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=2SeSj25QNx5Lg3e%2F49163rjPnI6UkjKv>

We'll deliver your petition to members of Congress at events across the
country to put the pressure on before the vote.

Here are the questions we'll be asking: Do you stand with the working
families and the small businesses that create two-thirds of American jobs?
Or do you stand with the CEO campaign contributors who cut our wages and
benefits and ship our jobs overseas? With unemployment hovering around
eight percent and millions of Americans still out of work, it is outrageous
that we are giving huge tax breaks to multinational companies.

*Sign our petition.*<http://act.truemajority.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=yYxnjWMmwZX1ZLZlkqCAXLjPnI6UkjKv>Then
share your story if you or someone you know has been personally
affected by a company outsourcing jobs. We'll be delivering your petition
signatures and your stories to Sen. Stabenow's office to show the
groundswell of support for her bill – and to provide personal testimony
showing how outsourcing has hurt everyday Americans.

The time to end this corporate gravy train is now. Sign our petition, and
then, share your story if a company outsourcing jobs overseas has
personally affected you or someone you know.

Dear Daniel,

*URGENT! BIKE FUNDING FOR YOUR COMMUNITY IS UNDER ATTACK*

During recent negotiations on a new transportation bill, the House of
Representatives proposed drastic cuts that would hurt bicycling. Their plan
would allow states to take federal transportation funds that make roads
safer for bicycling and divert them to other uses, without any input from
communities like yours.

This means local communities could miss out on the important benefits of
bicycling, like reduced road congestion, increased safety, and lower health
care costs. It could hurt your bike riding experience, too.

This House initiative threatens to scrap 20 years of steady Congressional
support for modest, cost-effective investments that make bicycling a safe
transportation choice for Americans. It is a bad idea that must be stopped.

*Please contact your two U.S. Senators and one U.S. Representative

transportation decisions about bicycling.

Friends and Fellow Progressives,

TAKE DOWN JOE WALSH CAMPAIGN - by CREDO SuperPac
SATELLITE PHONEBANK

Some of our York Township friends and supporters have asked for a volunteer
opportunity closer to home. This is what you want!

Wednesday, June 13th 6PM-8:30
Host: Margaret Harmon
540 S. Fairfield Ave
Lombard, IL 60148This event is open only to those of us who are No Friend
of Joe Walsh.

Why make calls? The most effective way of reaching voters is direct,
person-to-person contact. I'll bring phones and voter lists. If you have
your own phone to use, that's even better!.

Think about the implications if Joe Walsh is re-elected.Tea Party
extremists, emboldened by re-election, would stop at nothing to promote the
policies of the wealthy. We would see more tax breaks for corporations and
giant cuts to programs the middle class depends on like Medicare, Social
Security, and public education.
We have a plan to defeat this Tea Party darling, but we need to start
identifying persuadable voters as early as possible. The more people we are
able to contact now, the more voters we can turnout or persuade by November.

RSVP Contact: Carolyn Quinn 815-276-9056 or online at

Can't wait to hear from you and meet you!

*

Dear Daniel,

Here's the most direct proof yet that Republicans care more about
protecting Big Oil than *anything* else — even our national security and
our troops:

* Republicans in Congress are working to block the military from developing
biofuels that will save lives and save money by reducing the military's
dependence on oil.*1

This is brazen — even for the GOP. As Congress works to finalize the
defense budget, we need to call out Republicans' attempts to keep the
military locked into dirty, dangerous energy.

* Tell Republicans: Stop forcing the military to use dirty energy. Click
here to automatically sign the
petition.<http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=6893341&id=41081-2914033-KD9Y_ax&t=8>
*

We know that as a whole, our dependence on oil is a threat to our national
security and well-being, both in terms of our dependence on hostile regimes
and the rapid escalation of climate change.

* But for the military, the costs of oil dependence are far more acute. One
in eight troop casualties in Iraq came as a result of protecting fuel
convoys, according to a 2009 study by the military.2 And the rising price
of oil will put the military more than $3 billion over budget this year,
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said earlier this month.*3

So it only makes sense that the military, as our nation's largest and most
demanding energy user, would seek alternatives to ever more costly
fossil-fuel, whose transportation and defense represents a clear point of
vulnerability for our soldiers. Everyone from the President, to military
leadership4, to the airline industry5 agrees.

But not the oil-money soaked Republican party. Earlier this month, the
House passed a 2013 defense budget which included provisions that would
block the military from purchasing, developing and even testing biofuels.
And last week, the Senate Armed Services Committee — with the help of Dirty
Democrats Sens. Jim Webb and Joe Manchin — followed suit.6 But if we raise
enough pressure, there's still time to strike these provisions from the
final bill on the Senate floor.

* Tell Republicans: Stop forcing the military to use dirty energy. Click
here to automatically sign the
petition.<http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=6893341&id=41081-2914033-KD9Y_ax&t=9>
*

Republicans claim these provisions are about the costs of alternative
fuels, but immediately undermined that hollow claim by passing a resolution
to promote the use of expensive and filthy coal-to-liquid fuel.

It is literally sick that oil industry campaign contributions to
Republicans could so successfully maintain the vicious cycle of our
continued dependence on oil, which creates the need to engage with hostile
nations, which endangers our troops in military operations, which require
even more fossil fuel transported at higher costs and greater risk to
military personnel, (all while speeding catastrophic climate change.)

* Republicans love to talk about "supporting the troops." We need to remind
them that that should mean our soldiers in harm's way, not oil industry
lobbyists.*
