This is all about the organization that aims to transform the Illinois Democratic Party from within. PDI also exists to act as a bridging organization between Progressive groups throughout Illinois. It's time for a cohesive Progressive movement, and we intend to facilitate exactly that.

[PDI] Fwd: Stop the Trap!
Anyone know if this is true?

Dear Daniel,
Right now, industry lobbyists and bureaucrats are putting the final touches
on an international trade agreement that could strip away many of our
Internet freedoms and cast ordinary Internet users as criminals.
The deal is being pushed forward in a series of closed-door meetings away
from the scrutiny of digital rights advocates and Internet users. We've
stopped bad Internet policies like this before. Now it's time to stop the
Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).
* Don't Let the TPP Trap You. Stop This Deal
Today.<http://act.freepress.net/go/11907?t=1&akid=3829.9916736.nRFruj>
*
Free Press is partnering with our friends at
OpenMedia.ca<http://act.freepress.net/go/11908?t=2&akid=3829.9916736.nRFruj>to
alert users about this bad deal. If approved the TPP would:
- Criminalize some everyday Internet use.
- Force service providers to collect and hand over your private
data without user protections.
- Give media conglomerates the *power to fine you for Internet use*,
remove online content — including entire websites — and even
terminate your
Internet access!
To learn more about the TPP, visit
stopthetrap.net<http://act.freepress.net/go/11909?t=3&akid=3829.9916736.nRFruj>
.
OpenMedia.ca rightly calls the TPP an "Internet trap."1 If it passes,
TPPcould criminalize ordinary
Internet actions — like linking to certain content or sites.
This is ridiculous. Governments around the world need to hear from Internet
users like you before the TPP becomes the law of the Web:
* Don't let the TPP trap
you.<http://act.freepress.net/go/11907?t=4&akid=3829.9916736.nRFruj>

Thank you,
Josh, Tim and the rest of the Free Press Action Fund team

[PDI] Update/Reminder: A Discussion of the Expanding Role of Money in Politics
Update/Reminder: A Discussion of the Expanding Role of Money in Politics
(Please note that after we had settled on the date and time for this event, Thursday, September 6, 7-9 pm, we found that it conflicted with the Obama acceptance speech at the Democratic convention. Nevertheless we will hold the panel discussion as originally scheduled. Thus we will have the event even if very few people attend. Citizens may record Obama's speech for viewing later; also the Democrats may still change the time of the Obama speech).
For more information, contact:
Robert Tracy, Director, Elmhurst MovetoAmend
166 E. Lake St., Unit F
Elmhurst, IL 60126
Email: Elmhurst@MoveToAmend.org (you may need to copy this email address into your email program)
Phone: 630-484-1555
In 2010, the Supreme Court decided (5 to 4) Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission to uphold freedom of speech of corporations in political elections. They decided that: 1) corporations are persons and merit protection under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, and 2) money equals speech.
The Court concluded that corporations have the right to spend money without limit in political elections from their general treasuries, thereby eliminating the effectiveness of existing disclosure regulations. There should be no surprise that corporations and wealthy persons are now spending huge amounts of money to influence elections. A conservative estimate indicates $2 to $5 billion may be spent during this election season.
Many feel that our Democracy and Government, meaning the politicians, are being bought by wealthy individual and corporate interests in an unprecedented way since the Citizens United ruling. What are the full implications of the ruling, and what can citizens do to help make Democracy healthier?
What: Maryam Judar, community lawyer at Citizen Advocacy Center, will moderate a non-partisan discussion of the Expanding Role of Money in Politics. One topic to be included: THE CITIZENS UNITED DECISION: UPHOLDING FREE SPEECH OR DIMINISHING DEMOCRACY?
When: Thursday, September 6, 7-9 pm
Where: 182 N. York Street, Elmhurst, IL (Citizen Advocacy Center)
RSVP: Phone 630-833-4080 or Email cac@citizenadvocacycenter.org
For more information: Email Robert Tracy at Elmhurst@MoveToAmend.org or 630.484.1555
Come and participate!

This is probably the single most important story of 2012. This is the noose
that has been strangling local governments, non-profits, universities,
unions, pension funds and the like GLOBALLY. This IS the housing crisis,
the local services crisis, and the pension crisis at their common root.

[PDI] Kucinich Action - it's FREE and easy to sign up!

<SNIP>

With this new organization, we endeavor to build a powerful grassroots
movement to return the power to the people in our political system.

*
MY comment: Kucinich's own words AND actions over many decades have
consistently and boldly challenged the powers that be. His track record
of not only listening to WE The People, but actually reaching out to us
for help in formulating solutions and legislation provides reason to
hope that this new organization may actually make valuable contributions
in our national healing, provided you and I are willing to give it a chance.

[PDI] Extend The Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit For Ten Years
Hi,
Tell Congress to stop with the financial yo-yo effect in the renewable
energy industry, and give clean energy suppliers a predictable tax
regulation environment for the next decade. The federal PTC is the biggest
factor in renewable energy development, and its impending expiration and
year-by-year on-off nature us causing boim and bust cycles in the entire
industry. This could mean the difference between a domestic manufacturing
base, or more foreign imports.
That's why I created a petition to The United States House of
Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama,
which says:
"Dear Federal Government, please end regulatory and financisl uncertainty
in the renewable energy industry; renew the PTC for a solid ten years, and
let America become a true renewable energy leader!"
Will you sign this petition? Click here:

Thanks!

[PDI] Fwd: Criminalizing what?

As you read this, lobbyists are setting a trap of restrictions that will
criminalize daily uses of the Internet. But politicians move when public
pressure becomes impossible to ignore. You've already signed the
StopTheTrap.net petition. Please take the next step by spreading the word

today.*
This week, negotiations are taking place behind closed doors to create the
TPP's Internet trap *criminalizing our day-to-day use of the Internet
through expensive fines.*1
You and over 80,000 others around the world pushed back by signing the
StopTheTrap.net petition. Yet the list of TPP lobbyists is also growing;
over 600 from telecom, media, and other conglomerates are privy to these
secret negotiations.2 *We need the entire pro-Internet community to push
back against the TPP's Internet trap.*
Will you take the next crucial step by *sharing the petition on
**Facebook*<http://action.cwa-union.org/salsa/track.jsp?v=2&c=6TgoCfv%2BKswHaxOiguOnjG57lyejqZCT>

*
After citizens stood against big telecom and media conglomerates' attempts
to push through national laws that would crush free expression and
innovation online, their lobbyists decided to go behind closed doors
through the TPP. *It's an undemocratic, extreme attempt to take decisions
about the Internet out of your hands.*
But the pro-Internet community is taking the fight global as well. We've
assembled a powerful coalition of people and organizations—including
experts at Public Knowledge, Public Citizen, and the Electronic Frontier
Foundation—who are currently on the ground at meetings in San Diego. They
have committed to hand-deliver the StopTheTrap.net petition signatures to
leaders, but we need to give them the numbers to have influence.
*Please help us hit the crucial 100,000 signatures mark by reaching out on *
*Facebook*<http://action.cwa-union.org/salsa/track.jsp?v=2&c=%2FgLt%2FP6QalUQyYC6B%2F0LD257lyejqZCT>

today.*
The pro-Internet community is already *having an impact across borders.* In
the U.S., 130 members of Congress just signed a letter calling for secret
TPP documents to be made public;3 in Canada the largest federal opposition
party has come out against the TPP;4 rifts are also developing between
other signatory countries.5
If we work together we could all be part of a foundational achievement of
the global pro-Internet community: dismantling this Internet trap before it
gets set. Thanks for sharing through the links above.

[PDI] We're gaining momentum! (TPP negotiations)
---------- Forwarded message ----------

Date: Jun 29, 2012 4:23 PM
Subject: We're gaining momentum!
To: "Daniel A. Stafford" <aquarianm@gmail.com>
Daniel,
We just got an email from one of our members telling us, "I must say that
your email was about the* scariest thing I ever read, and I'm 74 and enjoy
science fiction movies."*
Like her, you're one of nearly *75,000 people who have sent a message* calling
on world leaders and trade representatives to come clean about the
Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
In fact, we've sent so many messages to world leaders negotiating this
top-secret agreement, that we've literally *filled their inboxes to capacity
* letting them know we won't be left in the dark about this agreement. Due
the huge volume of emails we sent, some of your messages may have bounced,
and we apologize if there was any confusion, but this means that *we're
making a huge impact*.
Our partners at Public Citizen, who helped kick-start it all by leaking
proposed chapters of the agreement, are going to *deliver your petitions in
San Diego next week*.
The biggest problem with this treaty is that, due to the extreme secrecy
surrounding it, only a few people have heard of it. But that is starting to
change.
The Nation just released a piece on it -- "NAFTA on Steroids" -- that you
should totally read and tell all your friends about.
<http://act.sumofus.org/go/559?t=1&akid=607.596245.-89-7v>
*We can and are helping push the TPP further into the public eye *by
sharing the news and starting the opposition now, before the next round of
talks begin. We hope that this growing awareness is just the tip of the
iceberg.
Onward,
--Emma, Kaytee, and the Rest of Us
P.S. In case The Nation article wasn't enough for you, we wanted to leave
you with a few more to read over the weekend:

[PDI] The worst treaty in history
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: "Emma Pullman, SumOfUs.org" <us@sumofus.org>
Date: Jun 27, 2012 2:25 PM
Subject: The worst treaty in history
To: "Daniel A. Stafford" <aquarianm@gmail.com>
*These people are negotiating a terrifying new treaty that would give
unprecedented new "rights" to corporations. Help us stop them.*
<http://act.sumofus.org/go/546?t=1&akid=602.596245._dVmHy>
[image: Click to Add Your
Name]<http://act.sumofus.org/go/546?t=2&akid=602.596245._dVmHy>
Daniel,
In the back of a swanky San Diego hotel, corporate lobbyists are gathering
next week to negotiate an ultra-secret trade deal that will empower
*corporations
to sue our governments if they dare pass any laws that might infringe on
profits.*
If that's not hitting close enough to home, then check this out -- newly
leaked secret documents show that if the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
becomes law, *you could be dragged to court and receive a large fine simply
for clicking on the wrong link.*
But here's the good news:* We can actually stop this.* The corporations are
counting on ramming the treaty through as quickly and secretly as possible
-- before the public and the media even start paying attention. That's why
we're partnering with pro-internet organization OpenMedia.ca: If we speak
up with a unified voice now, we can force participating governments to come
clean.
Tell national leaders and trade representatives negotiating the TPP in
secret that we won't let them ambush us with a hidden agenda to* let
corporations censor our internet*, and gain more power over our lives.
Sign our urgent petition at StopTheTrap.net
today!<http://act.sumofus.org/go/546?t=3&akid=602.596245._dVmHy>
*The only reason that we know anything about these top-secret talks is
because two chapters of the draft agreement were just leaked.* Now, we know
that drug companies will be able to stop generic medicine from being
produced -- which means that a young girl with HIV will die because her
family can't afford the medicine any more. And a foreign-owned oil company
will be able to sue your democratically-elected government simply for
strengthening environmental regulations that will threaten its profits.
But this treaty also threatens to impose* dangerous censorship that would
threaten the open foundation of the Internet.* Service providers could be
forced to collect and hand over our private data *Internet users could be
turned into criminals*. Big media conglomerates would be given the power to
fine us for our Internet use, remove online content--even entire
websites--and *cut off our Internet access completely*.
Corporate lawyers are trying to avoid at all costs us knowing about the
controversial provisions in the agreement, because it will draw criticism
from citizens and businesses, making reaching an agreement more difficult.
That's why we need a massive public outcry now to make sure that our
leaders know that we're watching.
Sign the urgent petition now to national leaders and trade representatives
before next week's talks begin. Your signature will send a message to each
country's leaders.<http://act.sumofus.org/go/546?t=4&akid=602.596245._dVmHy>
Thanks for making sure that people come before corporate profits,
--Emma, Kaytee, Taren and the rest of us
******
*Background Information*
*What is the Trans-Pacific Partnership? Who is participating?*
The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a multilateral free trade agreement that
aims to further liberalize the economies of the Asia-Pacific region.
Currently, 11 countries are party to the negotiations including the United
States, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru,
Singapore, and Vietnam. The U.S. joined the talks in November, 2009, and
both Canada and Mexico will be taking part in the 13th round of
negotiations that begin on July 2, 2012. By this time next year, Japan is
expected to join. The Agreement is designed to be expandable to accommodate
new members.
*What provisions are in the treaty?*
Since the text is currently top secret, there is no way to tell the full
scope of the treaty, but two leaked chapters -- the Intellectual Property
and Investment chapters -- give sobering glimpses into the treaty.
The agreement has been accused of being excessively restrictive, providing
intellectual property restraints beyond those in other free trade
agreements like the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). In
developing countries like Vietnam, TPP could even limit access to
affordable medication, including generic drugs.
Under the TPP, corporations would gain an array of privileges:
- Rights to acquire land, natural resources, factories without
government review
- Risks and costs of offshoring to low wage countries eliminated
- Special guaranteed "minimum standard of treatment" for relocating firms
- Compensation for loss of "expected future profits" from health, labor
environmental, laws (indirect or "regulatory" takings compensation)
- Right to move capital without limits
- New rights cover vast definition of investment: intellectual property,
permits, derivatives
- Ban performance requirements, domestic content rules. Absolute ban,
not only when applied to investors from signatory countries
The TPP will impose a set of extreme foreign investor privileges and rights
and their private enforcement through the notorious "investor-state"
system. This system elevates individual corporations and investors to equal
standing with each TPP signatory country's government- and above all of us
citizens.
Under this regime, foreign investors can skirt domestic courts and laws,
and sue governments directly before tribunals of three private sector
lawyers operating under World Bank and UN rules to demand taxpayer
compensation for any domestic law that investors believe will diminish
their "expected future profits".
According to a leaked version of the TPP's Intellectual Property Rights
chapter, the TPP would:
- Criminalize some everyday uses of the Internet,
- Force service providers to collect and hand over your private data
without privacy safeguards, and
- Give media conglomerates more power to send you fines in the mail,
remove online content—including entire websites—and even terminate your
access to the Internet.

Dear Catherine,
As a candidate, Obama promised to renegotiate NAFTA, the trade deal that
has undermined workers and the environment.
As president, Obama has pushed through corporate trade agreements that
build on the NAFTA model -- including with South Korea, Colombia and Panama.
*Stop him before he does
worse.*<http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=rvG4NwvaqVqoT%2FUmplFMcrk7GX9xEpDC>
Now leaks of negotiations with eight Pacific countries reveal Obama's
intention to out-NAFTA NAFTA.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal has been negotiated in secret
(except for 600 corporate advisors). The TPP would:
- reward outsourcing of jobs to lower-wage countries;
- give foreign corporations immunity from U.S. laws;
- allow foreign corporations to challenge U.S. laws in foreign (secret)
tribunals; and
- wipe out national protections for workers or the environment.
U.S. negotiators are pushing these worse-than-NAFTA measures on the Pacific
countries.
*Take a minute to tell President Obama (and Congress) that we won't stand
for it. *<http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=CWHMyvS0qx59BrkGa%2FGgkrk7GX9xEpDC>

"You've been owned!" That's what product manufacturers are hoping the
Supreme Court will tell Americans this fall.
*The Court will decide if you have the right to resell the very things that
YOU OWN -- your clothes, your iPod, even your house:*
*Please click here for more details, and tell the White House and Congress
to stand by Americans' rights to resell the things we
own.*<http://act.demandprogress.org/go/627?t=2&akid=1407.2058961.WmhT_S>

Product manufacturers are trying to take away your right to resell items
that are manufactured abroad, in whole or in part. *In this globalized
world, that's almost anything you own. *Today we're launching
YouveBeenOnwed.org<http://act.demandprogress.org/go/627?t=5&akid=1407.2058961.WmhT_S>
to
help Americans fight back.
If the Supreme Court rules with manufacturers, we might have to *say
goodbye to Ebay, Craigslist, and the old-fashioned American yard sale.*
Manufacturers will have an extra incentive to off-shore jobs. Re-use and
recycling efforts will be undermined, harming the environment.
*Your pockets will be empty, and your basement will be a mess of junk you
don't want or need:*
*Please tell the White House and Congress to stand by Americans' rights to
resell the things we own -- just click
here.<http://act.demandprogress.org/go/627?t=6&akid=1407.2058961.WmhT_S>
