Dear peace folks from the 13th District,

Next week a delegation of concerned citizens of the 13th Congressional
District will be delivering a letter to Rep. Judy Biggert asking her to
drop her amendment to the federal housing relief bill that eliminate many
legal immigrants from getting help (see attached letter also pasted
below). Could you add your name to this list? If so, please send your
name and address to me by the end of the week.

peace

RE: H.R. 1106, "Helping Families Save Their Homes Act of 2009", Amendment
#37

Dear Congresswoman Biggert,

We strongly disapprove of your amendment to the federal housing relief
bill (HR 1106) that would limit eligibility to US citizens and green card
holders. If this amendment (amendment #37) were to become law, refugees,
asylees, high-skilled workers in the process of getting green cards, and
other legal immigrants would be excluded. In addition, US-born children
of immigrants would face homelessness solely because of the immigration
status of their parents.

During the current economic downturn and housing crisis, it is of utmost
importance that working families stay together, have a roof over their
heads, and can access the medical care they need. Denying assistance to
families because they have the wrong immigration status makes it that
much more likely that these families and children will lose their homes
and go without health care.

We are deeply troubled by your recent record on these issues of great
importance to immigrant families. We hope that you will not take the
divisive path that blames immigrants and refugees for our societal ills,
and will instead work for policies that truly support our families, our
communities, and our nation. We urge you to repeal Amendment #37 of the
"Helping Families Save Their Homes Act".

Sincerely,

Joshua Hoyt, Executive Director, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and
Refugee Rights
Ed Shurna, Executive Director, Chicago Coalition for the Homeless
Miguel Moreno, Director of Hispanic Ministry, Diocese of Joliet
Thomas Garlitz, Director of Peace and Social Justice, Diocese of Joliet
Tom Cordaro, Pax Christi Dupage
Israel Vargas, Hispanic Ministry, St Mary Immaculate, Plainfield
